 Training

Training courses, tests and exams are provided for the following:

SA Measurer’s Course:
The course has been designed for hunters who want to qualify as official measurers for the S.A. Record Book established and recognised by CHASA and SA Hunters. The S.A. Record Book is the equivalent of Roland Ward but limited to trophies taken by South African Hunters under South African skies.

The course is initially run over two evenings culminating in a theoretical and practical examination during which horns and skulls of different species are measured under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Thereafter, the trainee is mentored and assessed at two horn measuring competitions of the Association and if successful, a certificate is issued by CHASA and your name will then be entered into the register of officially recognised SA Measurers.

CHASA Proficiency Certificate:
This is a Nationally Approved course and the Certificate is recognised Nationally.
Normally 2 courses are run per year, starting March and September.

The Exam is written on a Saturday within 2 weeks after the last lecture.
In order to obtain the Certificate, a practical shooting test also has to be passed.  This test is done on the shooting range at a time and date arranged from time to time. The test comprises:

  1. Distance 50 meters - 3 rounds - freestanding
  2. Distance 100 meters - 3 rounds - sitting or kneeling
  3. Distance 200 meters - 3 rounds - prone

No artificial support is used.  The target is a lifesize Impala and 5 points are awarded for each shot in the target area of 120mm diameter over the heart.  In order to pass, a minimum of 30 points is required.

CHASA Proficiency Certificate for Bowhunters:
This course follows the same lines as the normal CHASA Proficiency course, but is designed for Bowhunters specifically.
The lectures are arranged as demand dictates. For details, contact the Training Officer.

Basic First-Aid Course:
This course is held once a year, contact us regarding dates.  It is run by a qualified Doctor, who is also a hunter, and is aimed particularly at basic first aid in the hunting field.  No testing is done and a Certificate of Attendance is awarded.
